{"id":270464,"date":"2016-01-13T12:09:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T08:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=270464"},"modified":"2016-01-13T12:09:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T08:09:38","slug":"armenian-oppositionist-threatened-with-jail-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2016\/01\/13\/armenian-oppositionist-threatened-with-jail-press.html","title":{"rendered":"Armenian Oppositionist Threatened with Jail: Press"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tJirair Sefilyan, one of the leaders of New Armenia opposition alliance and Founding Parliament movement, was called into questioning in the Investigative Committee of Armenia on January 12, where he was threatened with arrest, local <em>Haykakan Zhamanak<\/em> daily reports.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVaruzhan Avetisyan, a spokesperson for Founding Parliament, told the paper that investigator Amram Makinyan threatened Sefilyan, saying: &ldquo;Stop your activities, otherwise you&#39;ll be jailed.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe law enforcement official, as stated by Avetisyan, did not elaborate on the reasons for Sefilyan&#39;s arrest, claiming only that the oppositionist had no right to leave the city when campaigning against last year&#39;s constitutional amendments since he had been arrested in spring, 2015 &ndash; and subsequently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2015\/05\/04\/founding-parliament-members-released-from-prison-on-own-recognizance.html\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">released on his own recognizance<\/span><\/a> &#8211; for allegedly planning anti-government protests in Yerevan on April 24, the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe members of the opposition movement, however, are convinced the real reason behind the threat is Founding Parliament&#39;s recent statement calling on Armenians to &ldquo;take up arms in self-defense, if necessary.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&ldquo;[State officials] are so ignorant that they did not even understand this statement.
