{"id":277396,"date":"2017-01-16T19:37:31","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T15:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/epress.am\/?p=277396"},"modified":"2017-01-16T19:37:31","modified_gmt":"2017-01-16T15:37:31","slug":"opposition-activist-sentenced-to-2-years-in-prison-for-assaulting-police-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2017\/01\/16\/opposition-activist-sentenced-to-2-years-in-prison-for-assaulting-police-officer.html","title":{"rendered":"Opposition Activist Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Assaulting Police Officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-277381\" src=\"http:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/safaryan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Yerevan&#8217;s Kentron and Nork-Marash district court judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan today convicted opposition activist <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2016\/12\/27\/opposition-activist-charged-with-violence-against-police-officer-says-he-has-no-hope-for-acquittal.html\">Gevorg Safaryan<\/a><\/span><\/strong> of violence against a representative of authorities and sentenced him to 2 years in prison. Speaking to reporters before today&#8217;s sentencing, Safaryan had said he had no expectation that he might be acquitted and that he was convinced he was headed straight back to the Nubarashen prison after the final hearing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Addressing the court and the audience with his final speech, Safaryan again spoke about the contradictions between witnesses&#8217; testimonies, stressing that they had revealed no proof of him having hit police officer Gegham Khachatryan. \u201cThe prosecutor thereby violated all legal rules and a person&#8217;s right to the presumption of innocence, and asked for a guilty verdict without actually proving my guilt,\u201d the activist stated.<\/p>\n<p>Safaryan also commented on prosecutor Vahe Dolmazyan&#8217;s claim that the court could not trust the defense witnesses&#8217; testimonies \u201cbecause they are the defendant&#8217;s friends and are thus biased.\u201d \u201cIf that is the case, how can they they believe that the police officers who work under Gegham Khachatryan have given credible testimonies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The activist then proceeded to insist that witnesses Pavel Gabrielyan and Artur Hekimyan, namely, had made \u201cobviously made up statements\u201d in court. \u201cIn their pre-trial testimonies they had claimed that [on the day of the incident] they had come up to us and wished us a happy New Year.
