{"id":280957,"date":"2017-06-05T18:45:29","date_gmt":"2017-06-05T14:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/epress.am\/?p=280957"},"modified":"2017-06-05T18:45:29","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T14:45:29","slug":"administrative-court-dismisses-suit-against-armenian-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2017\/06\/05\/administrative-court-dismisses-suit-against-armenian-police.html","title":{"rendered":"Administrative Court Dismisses Suit Against Armenian Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/sevazgest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-280944\" src=\"http:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/sevazgest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Administrative Court of Armenia, presided over by judge Gevorg Sosyan, today dismissed the suit filed by Gohar Sargsyan, mother of conscript Tigran Ohanjanyan who was killed during military service in 2007, against the Armenian police, which sought to establish that <strong><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"http:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2016\/11\/30\/police-representative-justifies-officers-use-of-excessive-force-against-protesters-in-court.html\">the actions of law enforcement officers<\/a><\/span><\/strong> on February 11, 2015, were unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Recall, on February 11, 2015, police officers used excessive force to prevent a group of soldiers\u2019 parents from staging a demonstration outside the residence of the Armenian president.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xm6miSbiu2k?wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After the issuance of today\u2019s verdict, those present in the courtroom, including mothers of several other soldiers killed in non-combat conditions, began shouting \u201cshame on the judge\u201d and that the judge was \u201ccarrying out an order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tN_sg0CZYhw?wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Epress.am after the hearing, Sargsyan\u2019s lawyer, Robert Revazyan said in turn that the verdict was \u201cboth expected and unexpected\u201d for him: \u201cIt was expected because we don\u2019t have an independent judicial system. On the other hand, it was unexpected because the defendant had presented no counterarguments to our claims. I\u2019m convinced that the court did not make this decision independently. The [judge] was either pressured or intimidated [to dismiss the suit].\u201d Revazyan added that his client intended to appeal against this decision.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning, just before the start of the court hearing, the mothers held a nearly one-hour-long demonstration outside the presidential residence. When asked by an Epress.am reporter as to why the protesters were this time allowed to stand outside the residence and were not being dispersed, police captain Najaryan replied: \u201cThey are standing normally. Right now they are just standing here, right beside us. We see no problems, and are not going to create any. As to what happened [on February 11], I can\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy head of the Arabkir police station, lieutenant colonel Karen Babelyan, then intervened in the conversation to express his \u201chope that the court issues a right verdict today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our country, the final decision belongs to the court; let\u2019s wait for it and see who was actually at fault in the incident.
