In the background, the adults are speaking: don\u2019t do this! You are doing it wrong. The girl\u2019s name is Lilith and today, she is one of eight women artists presenting their work at a new exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dzen Dzeni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curated by Creopia, a creative organization focused on shedding light on social issues, based in Armenia\u2019s third largest city, Vanadzor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-330051\" src=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1755\" height=\"1240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001.jpg 1755w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/04-1-of-1-compressed_page-0001-1536x1085.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1755px) 100vw, 1755px\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI understand that they need to tell you what to do and what not to do, it makes sense. But I also understand that it creates a reaction in you, and that makes you who you are,\u201d Lilith says. \u201cIt is easy to just take what they say, and it is harder to fight back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-330011\" src=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Exibition_Vanadzor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Exibition_Vanadzor.jpg 700w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Exibition_Vanadzor-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/epress.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Exibition_Vanadzor-110x75.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Vanadzor, an exhibition like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dzen Dzeni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is something unprecedented. The eight local artists, who were closely cooperating during the three-month process of preparation, share with the public their very intimate and personal perspectives on motherhood, war or growing up as a girl and living as a woman in Armenia. The exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dzen Dzeni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the name can be roughly translated to English as \u201cvoices united\u201d &#8211; presents multiple audiovisual works and installations, composed to illustrate and complete the written poems.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">The opening on Saturday evening was packed with visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhile the generation of our parents is still very conservative, our generation starts to open up. This is how we can get things moving,\u201d says Lusine, a co-founder of Creopia. While visiting a slam poetry evening in France, she was excited by the idea to organize something similar in her hometown, Vanadzor. \u201cWhat we want to do in Creopia is to talk through art about social issues and gender justice is our main focus. I knew I wanted to figure out how to talk about the patriarchy and the position of the women in our society. Poetry is one of the ways to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWe were thinking about slam poetry at first,\u201d says Maggie, one of the exhibiting artists. \u201cbut later it developed into the format you can see today. For around three months, we were meeting together with other women artists. At first, we simply started to share our individual experiences. We decided to write texts that would reflect these personal stories. Then, once the writings were ready, we were thinking about how to accompany them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggie herself deals with the topic of motherhood in her work. A painting of a giant pink vagina accompanies her poem about a wound, which keeps hurting after giving birth. Another poem is exhibited side by side with an untouched plate of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">khavits<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a simple Armenian porridge meal. \u201cFrom childhood, they feed us, they tell us what is right and wrong, they give us hope that we will become good mothers in the future,\u201c writes Maggie. \u201eThen &#8211; we become mothers. With specific characteristics &#8211; either good or bad. Good, if you do not exist, if you are not visible, you eat not more not less than your child needs, you care about yourself not more not less than your husband needs. Bad, if you did just a thing more or a thing less.\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Another artwork is focused on dealing with the presence of war, or with the possibility of war &#8211; something everyone in Armenia knows all too well. Shushanik decided to reflect on military posters, calling on mothers to raise good soldiers, or featuring small children wearing a military uniform to promote military clothes and gear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aren\u2019t you a mother?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Be caring,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Give a birth to a son,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Send him to the army,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dream that he will ever come back.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">**<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Armenian non-profit organization Women&#8217;s Support Center puts it: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armenia is a patriarchal society, meaning that traditional cultural beliefs usually place women in positions of less power than men. Sometimes controlling behaviors are learned from a very young age, where it is expected for boys in Armenian families to control the actions and whereabouts of his sisters and even sometimes his mother.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are numerous studies on the prevailing issue of sex-selective abortions in Armenia &#8211; according to <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wvi.org\/armenia\/caring-equality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of them<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Armenians are 6 times more likely to prefer baby boys to girls \u2013 \u201ca circumstance that accounts for at least one of ten abortions out of a preference for male children.\u201d Until now, people would often wish parents-to-be to have a boy, rather than a girl.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI think this exhibition speaks to the hearts of the majority of women. Because we do not just share some theories.
