Maybe it was just ahead of its time. Or maybe there were just too many features to ever allow it to be defined properly, but Google is saying today that they are going to stop any further development of Google Wave, reports TechCrunch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wave, a real time messaging platform, was\u00a0<\/span>unveiled in May 2009<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to an enthusiastic crowd of developers at the Google I\/O event in San Francisco.\u00a0<\/span>It would<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u201cset a new benchmark for interactivity,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Sergey Brin<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is part email, part Twitter and part instant messaging. Users can drag files from the desktop to a discussion. Wave even showed character-by-character live typing. It\u00a0<\/span>fully launched<\/span><\/a>\u00a0this last May.<\/span><\/p>\n

And while the service has\u00a0<\/span>many<\/span><\/a>, or at least some, passionate users (including TechCrunchers), it\u00a0<\/span>\u201chas not seen the user adoption we would have liked,<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u201d says Google.<\/span><\/p>\n

The service will remain live, says Google, although they say it may eventually come down. Google has also open sourced parts of the code and say they will create tools to let users \u201cliberate\u201d their data:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave\u2019s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users easily \u201cliberate\u201d their content from Wave.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
