There have been a few occasions when there’s been a need for Armenia to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence, and this is one of those times, said Yerevan-based political analyst Levon Melik-Shakhnazaryan at a press conference today dedicated to the 19th anniversary of Nagorno-Karabakh’s declaration of independence.<\/p>\n

The analyst connects this period with the international court’s recognition of Kosovo.<\/p>\n

“What’s important here was the configuration provided by the court; that is, self-declaration is not contrary to international law,” said Melik-Shakhnazaryan, stating his conviction that it would be much better if the first country to recognize NKR’s independence won’t be Armenia. At the same time, the analyst believes that “today, it’s worth it, for Armenia to take that step.”<\/p>\n
