Modern art by local Armenians and Diasporan Armenians will be exhibited at the Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia’s Open University today. A proposal has been put forth by artist Sahak Poghosyan and art critic Lilit Sargsyan on developing an Armenian foundation, as well as a center, for modern art.<\/p>\n

An open letter and draft of the projects have been sent to the country’s president, prime minister, National Assembly chair, and the ministers of diaspora and culture. Organizers are waiting for a response. According to organizers, their idea is such that an initiative that truly has national significance receives state backing and that the state finally turns its attention to Armenian modern art.<\/p>\n

Organizers plan to build the foundation through public and private donations, which will support the development of arts patronage and social balance in the country.<\/p>\n

Organizers note that they deliberately use the term “modern” instead of “contemporary,” since, in their opinion, “contemporary” in official circles is still associated with Armenia’s Modern Art Museum, which can be cause for misunderstanding.
