{"id":49220,"date":"2010-11-18T02:03:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T02:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/2010\/11\/18\/mosques-in-nagorno-karabakh-being-repaired\/"},"modified":"2010-11-18T02:03:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T02:03:00","slug":"mosques-in-nagorno-karabakh-being-repaired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2010\/11\/18\/mosques-in-nagorno-karabakh-being-repaired.html","title":{"rendered":"Mosques in Nagorno-Karabakh Being Repaired"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 21px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">Five Azerbaijani mosques and other religious sites located in and around Nagorno-Karabakh have been repaired in recent years as part of a government effort to preserve the unrecognized republic&#8217;s Islamic heritage, a senior Karabakh Armenian official told RFE\/RL&#8217;s Armenian service (Azatutyun Radio) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">Sergey Shahverdian, the head of Karabakh\u2019s tourism department, told RFE\/RL\u2019s Armenian service that the government in Stepanakert has spent 30 million drams (about $83,000) for that purpose since 2008 and plans to finance more restoration work next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">\u201cAll the cultural heritage preserved in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is the property of the Karabakh people,\u201d said Shahverdian. \u201cAccordingly, in restoring monuments, we don\u2019t differentiate with Armenian and Muslim architectural sites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">In his words, two of the three Shia mosques as well as an Islamic \u201cmadrasa\u201d building mostly repaired by the Karabakh authorities are located in Shushi (Shusha). It was mostly populated by Azerbaijanis before being captured by Karbakh Armenian forces in 1992.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">Shahverdian added that the repairs there were also sponsored Arshbishop Pargev Martirosian, the Shushi-based head of the Artsakh (Karabakh) diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church. But he gave no details of that assistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">Town residents, many of them former Armenian refugees from Baku and other parts of Azerbaijan, seemed divided in their assessment of the restoration effort. \u201cI agree so long as they remain only historial monuments,\u201d one woman told RFE\/RL.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">\u201cIf the Azerbaijanis destroyed our cemeteries and churches, why are we restoring their mosques?\u201d said another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'; min-height: 16px\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 14px\/normal 'Arian AMU'\">Also repaired was a mosque in Aghdam, an Azerbaijani town that has been under Karabakh Armenian control since 1993.
