AJZ Space and art critic Karin Grigoryan will be organizing a discussion titled “Practices of Art’s Self-Criticism” at 7 pm on Nov. 20.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The event’s Facebook page introduces the discussion as follows:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“A certain product was taken from Facebook\u2019s Armenian domain. The images are dislocated and have \u2018strayed.\u2019 But it’s possible to encounter these images in any place, to come face-to-face, to leave comments or questions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“A social network is an area for individuals to present themselves and represent their activities. Can it be identified with the place of art representation? If yes, then ‘What does art become?’ or ‘What is the difference between art and non-art?’ What new challenges are contemporary art institutions in Armenia faced with through the construction of representational spaces by Facebook?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“These displaced images simultaneously emphasize the task and the problem of the place. Almost all contemporary art centers in Armenia have an issue of space, which, in one way or another, is substituted by Facebook. In this way, strategic issues related to art become out-strayed.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“The current project tries to find a place for art\u2019s self-criticism.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The discussion will be followed by a meeting with local artist, photographer Ocean (Svetlana Antonyan) at 9:30 pm on Nov. 21. According to the artist, “We ‘like’ each other on Facebook, but it doesn’t seem to be working out; besides, lets talk about artist\u2013art institution\u2013the art market relationships.”<\/p>\n
