{"id":73794,"date":"2011-03-09T11:07:20","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T07:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=73794"},"modified":"2011-03-09T11:09:34","modified_gmt":"2011-03-09T07:09:34","slug":"more-azerbaijani-activists-detained-ahead-of-march-11-day-of-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/03\/09\/more-azerbaijani-activists-detained-ahead-of-march-11-day-of-protest.html","title":{"rendered":"More Azerbaijani Activists Detained Ahead of March 11 Day of Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police continue to crack down on activists ahead of the March 11 day of action in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by popular uprisings that drove out authoritarian leaders in Tunisia and Egypt, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2011-03-08\/azeri-police-warn-of-crackdown-as-opposition-rallies-support.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Bloomberg<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, opposition youth groups in Azerbaijan have started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/event.php?eid=192209267477787&amp;index=1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">campaign on Facebook<\/span><\/strong><\/a> to hold nationwide protests on March 11, which they&#8217;re calling &#8220;Great People&#8217;s Day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/03\/08\/azerbaijani-activists-under-pressure-ahead-of-march-11-day-of-protest\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">previously reported<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, one of the organizers, was arrested on Mar. 4 and ordered held in pretrial detention for a month for violating an order not to leave the city of Ganja while previous charges of evading military service were investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Hajiyev, 29, a Harvard graduate and a former parliament candidate, denies those charges and has linked his arrest to his Facebook activity, about which he was questioned by police earlier on Mar. 4, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/content\/azerbaijan_activist_prison\/2330387.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>RFE\/RL&#8217;s Azerbaijani service<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Mar. 8, two more activists were detained by police in Baku.<\/p>\n<p>Sakhavan Soltanli, from the youth wing of the opposition Musavat party, was being held at a police station but was expected to be released after questioning, his brother Qadim told RFE\/RL.
