{"id":85147,"date":"2011-04-13T12:27:51","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T07:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=85147"},"modified":"2011-04-13T12:40:15","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T07:40:15","slug":"armenian-foreign-ministry-responds-to-davutoglus-statement-on-stepanakert-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/13\/armenian-foreign-ministry-responds-to-davutoglus-statement-on-stepanakert-airport.html","title":{"rendered":"Armenian Foreign Ministry Responds to Davutoglu&#8217;s Statement on Stepanakert Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan&#8217;s decision \u2014 to be the first passenger on the Yerevan-Stepanakert flight \u2014 reflects the Republic of Armenia&#8217;s position on opening the Stepanakert airport, said RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs press spokesperson Tigran Balayan, speaking to Epress.am about Turkish foreign minister Ahmed Davutoglu&#8217;s earlier statement that Armenia should &#8220;stop taking provocative steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/13\/turkey-foreign-minister-calls-on-armenia-to-stop-taking-provocative-steps\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">previously reported<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, Davutoglu, responding to Azerbaijani delegation member Rafael Huseynov\u2019s question on the matter at a PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) meeting, said that the question of the airport was not discussed at the Committee of Ministers, and that the OSCE Minsk Group is currently dealing with this. &#8220;If there is a need, then we can definitely discuss this issue,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, RA presidential press spokesperson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/06\/armenian-presidents-plan-to-be-on-first-flight-to-stepanakert-remains-unchanged\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Armen Arzumanyan confirmed<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that the Armenian president&#8217;s plans to be the first passenger on the maiden flight is still in effect.<\/p>\n<p>Note, Karabakh\u2019s sole airport was closed in 1991 after a bloody war in which the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan. The republic is populated mainly by ethnic Armenians and exists today as a de-facto independent state under an uneasy ceasefire.
