{"id":89260,"date":"2011-04-25T14:42:53","date_gmt":"2011-04-25T09:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=89260"},"modified":"2011-04-25T14:43:40","modified_gmt":"2011-04-25T09:43:40","slug":"no-armenian-candidates-nominated-in-upcoming-turkish-parliamentary-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/25\/no-armenian-candidates-nominated-in-upcoming-turkish-parliamentary-elections.html","title":{"rendered":"No Armenian Candidates Nominated in Upcoming Turkish Parliamentary Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turkey&#8217;s citizens of Armenian descent have tried their chances with the ruling and opposition parties by applying to be parliament candidate nominees, but they were disappointed, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.todayszaman.com\/news-241881-parties-disappoint-armenian--candidate-hopefuls.html\"><strong>Today&#8217;s Zaman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were three Turkish citizens of Armenian origin, Arev Cebeci, Melkon Karak\u00f6se and Herman Balyan, who all applied from \u0130stanbul, where the majority of the country&#8217;s 60,000 Armenians live, to be candidate nominee on the lists of political parties for the upcoming June 12 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>Cebeci, who until recently served in the Bak\u0131rk\u00f6y Municipality as a representative for the opposition Republican People&#8217;s Party (CHP), said the CHP has failed the test. \u201cNon-Muslim minorities never felt close to the CHP because of its policies reminiscent of the Committee of Union and Progress, but I wanted to see if the leadership of [Kemal] K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7daro\u011flu would make a difference,\u201d he said, referring to K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7daro\u011flu&#8217;s speech at a recent party congress in which he had given signals that the party was ready to nominate candidates of Armenian and Kurdish origin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have Kurdish candidates, but not Armenians,\u201d Cebeci added.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the AK Party did not nominate any Armenian candidates, despite expectations from the Armenian community.<\/p>\n<p>Melkon Karak\u00f6se, a businessman who served as chair of the Foundation of the Surp Kevork Church, said it is \u201cunfortunate\u201d that there are no Armenian candidates nominated for June 12 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been part of this land for about 4,000 years. We would like to take part in the great mosaic of Turkey,\u201d said Karak\u00f6se, who had applied for a candidate nomination from the AK Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised that the AK Party, CHP and Peace and Democracy Party [BDP] did not nominate any candidates of Armenian origin because they had announcements supporting the idea that there should be Armenians in Parliament, too,\u201d said Hayko Ba\u011fdat, a businessperson who was born in \u0130stanbul to a Greek mother and an Armenian father.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 23 non-Muslims who have been elected as deputies in the Parliament of the Turkish Republic since 1935, the most recent Armenian was Ber\u00e7 Sahak Turan, who served in 1961-1964.
