{"id":93739,"date":"2011-05-09T13:15:32","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T08:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=93739"},"modified":"2011-05-09T13:17:02","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T08:17:02","slug":"any-day-now-armenian-national-congress-expects-sasun-mikaelyan-to-be-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/05\/09\/any-day-now-armenian-national-congress-expects-sasun-mikaelyan-to-be-released.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Any Day Now&#8217;: Armenian National Congress Expects Sasun Mikaelyan to be Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a few days now rumors have been circulating (especially among Armenian National Congress activists) that imprisoned oppositionist Sasun Mikaelyan will be released any day now.<\/p>\n<p>Epress.am attempted to receive confirmation from the Hospital for Detainees of the RA Ministry of Justice, where Mikaelyan is being treated; however, a hospital employee informed us that he has no information.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today [being May 9, Victory Day] is not a working day, and we don&#8217;t give out such information; please call on a working day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mikaelyan was arrested in March 2008 in connection with the events of Mar. 1\u20132, 2008, in Yerevan and charged with violating Article 225 (\u201cmass disorder\u201d) and 235 (\u201cillegal weapons possession\u201d) of Armenia\u2019s Criminal Code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSentenced to eight years in prison, he is the only one of the seven not to have been released on amnesty or other grounds. After more than a year and a half in the Kentron Penitentiary of the National Security Service (former KGB), he was transferred to the prison hospital, and then to a civilian hospital where he underwent surgery in mid-December,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/shahkhatun.am\/political-prisoners\/sasun-mikayelyan\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Shahkhtun: Wives of Armenia\u2019s Political Prisoners<\/strong><\/span><\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>Recall, HAK leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/28\/ter-petrossian-asks-supporters-to-wait-one-more-month-confident-haks-third-demand-will-be-met\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Levon Ter-Petrossian announced during the opposition\u2019s April 28 rally<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"> <\/span><\/strong>that he expects the only unfulfilled demand of the three demands he put forth to the Sargsyan administration \u2014 to free all remaining political prisoners \u2014 to be met by May 28.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/en\/2011\/04\/29\/next-time-ill-come-sit-with-you-zurabyan-tried-to-appease-sit-in-demonstrators\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">a group of disgruntled demonstrators didn\u2019t want to leave<\/span><\/strong><\/a> Liberty Square on Apr. 28 and sat on the steps of the opera building, calling for a sit-in.
