{"id":96515,"date":"2011-05-18T15:08:39","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T10:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.epress.am\/?p=96515"},"modified":"2011-05-18T15:10:01","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T10:10:01","slug":"lgbt-communities-in-europe-might-boycott-next-years-eurovision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/epress.am\/en\/2011\/05\/18\/lgbt-communities-in-europe-might-boycott-next-years-eurovision.html","title":{"rendered":"LGBT Communities in Europe Might Boycott Next Year&#8217;s Eurovision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has slammed Eurovision Song Contest-winning country Azerbaijan as unwelcoming to gays, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.pinkpaper.com\/NewsStory\/5353\/16\/05\/2011\/peter-tatchell-slams-winning-eurovision-country-for-poor-lgbt-record.aspx\"><strong>Pink Paper reported<\/strong><\/a> on May 16.<\/p>\n<p>Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal of Ell\/Nikki, representing Azerbaijan, scored 221 points with their song Running Scared, meaning that 2012&#8217;s event will now be hosted in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>But Peter Tatchell has slammed the prospect, claiming that they have a poor record on lesbian and gay rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAzerbaijan is not a welcoming or safe country for LGBT people,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Although homosexuality was decriminalized in 2001, the LGBT community suffers police harassment and brutality, including bashings, blackmail, intimidation, bribery and invasions of privacy. LGBT people risk eviction from their homes and dismissal from their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have no legal protection against discrimination.
