“Elections will never again be like that, as they did, doing what they want. Even if they turn somersaults,” said Armenian National Congress (HAK) coordinator Levon Zurabyan, speaking to journalists in Yerevan today and commenting on the observation that after last week’s joint declaration signed by the ruling coalition, the presidential elections can be considered over.
In the oppositionist’s words, much has changed over the past three years. “Civil society has been created, an atmosphere of intolerance has developed, a strong nationwide movement has been created which grows stronger day by day.”
On the other hand, Zurabyan continued, the regime is gradually breaking up and being consumed.
“The fact that they, using the most humiliating methods, essentially, applying political coercion with respect to the Prosperous Armenia party, are consolidating their team means their affairs are quite bad,” he said.
Note, however, that Zurabyan insists he is addressing this issue only because journalists contact him for comments, since he considers the coalition’s statement to be a third issue (that is, not a priority).
“Today in the world, there are completely different processes. Today the people stand up against autocratic regimes and we discuss some declaration that’s just a poor way to strengthen their own rank and file? What is there to discuss?” he said.
