Police Checkpoints on Armenia’s Roads: Checking for Car Thieves?

Since this morning, groups of about 8–10 police officers have been standing by the roads leading to villages in Kotayk marz (province). In each group, at least one officer was armed.

Police were stopping and investigating vehicles. Epress.am attempted to talk to officers stationed at six various spots, but only in two cases did officers agree to talk to the media.

“Upon orders by the police chief, in connection with an increase in vehicle crimes, measures have been taken and are being carried out,” said Kotayk Division sentry department chief, Lieutenant Colonel Muradyan, in response to a question by Epress.am as to why there are armed officers stationed along the road.

At another police checkpoint, officers said they’re implementing measures related to automobile thefts.

“There’s an order, we’ve been implementing measures since the 26th of the month connected to car thefts. Nothing’s happened,” said another Kotayk Division officer.
