The problem of the Nubarashen garbage dump is very serious, which poses a threat to not only Yerevan, but also the entire Ararat valley and surrounding villages, said Public Council member, environmentalist Karine Danielyan, while speaking to journalists in Yerevan today about the issues raised by the Public Council at its recent meeting with Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan.
“Both the underground and surface waters are being polluted, and landslides, and numerous problems arise, but the city is unable to solve the problem on its own. This is a government problem,” she said.
According to her, international agencies want to conduct new studies. Speaking of proposals by Armenian and international experts, Danielyan noted that the dump has to be isolated.
“In any cases, the dump is in such a condition that these poisons have to be brought out and eliminated. Here, it’s the problem of a method and the problem of money, but that the process has to be accelerated, that’s obvious,” she said.
The Public Council raised numerous issues with the mayor, he noted them and spoke of the need for solutions, however, Danielyan is amazed that there’s no one in city hall to provide the required information to Karapetyan.
“We are ready for the best unpaid experts to come, to gather and assist city hall, for Yerevan to come out of this ecological disaster, but city hall doesn’t want (this). And now they’ve supplied the new mayor so that suddenly that doesn’t happen: we have a department, it’s enough,” she concluded.
