Seismic Activity in South Caucasus, Turkey Maintained, Says Armenia’s Emergency Situations Ministry

From Nov. 24 to 30, the National Survey of Seismic Protection of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations did not register any earthquakes of a magnitude of 3.0 or more in the Republic of Armenia.

As reported by the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations press service, in the region, however, there have been 164 earthquakes measuring 3.0 and greater on the Richter scale, 156 of which occurred in Turkey’s eastern region of Van. On Nov. 24, a 4.0-magnitude quake struck Turkey, 21 km southwest of Eleşkirt (formerly Alashkert). In a one-hour period in the same epicenter zone, there were 2 tremors having magnitudes of 3–4 and 3.0. On the same day, an earthquake with its epicenter measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck 16 km southeast of the Turkish city of Iğdır.

On Nov. 24 and 25, two seismic activities of 3–4 magnitude were registered in the territory of Azerbaijan — the first, 23 km east of the city of Nakhchivan; the second, 9 km southwest of the city of Şəmkir (Shamkhor). On Nov. 27, tremors of 3.0 magnitude struck 30 km northwest of the Nagorno-Karabakh capital of Stepanakert and 19 km southwest of Azerbaijan’s Şəmkir.

Seismic activity is maintained in Turkey’s eastern region. Last week, 156 tremors were registered, one of which measured 7.0 in intensity (5.0 magnitude). It struck 3 km north of the city of Van on Nov. 30. The tremors again caused panic among the population.
