Retired Pilots in Yerevan Protest Unpaid Disability Compensation

Retired pilots with disabilities were protesting outside the Armenian president’s residence today.

“Every Thursday we’ve gathered outside the government building, and it’s yielded no results. No government staff has ever approached us, and no proposals toward solving our issue have ever been offered. All those who we have contacted till today have pointed to 26 Baghramyan Ave., pointing out [Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan. Only he can provide the solution to our problem. No more being modest and silent. We’ve come to the presidential resident to raise our voice of protest to the country’s top figure, demanding the disability payments owed to us by law,” said one retired pilot participating in the protest.

According to the retired pilots, their numbers are gradually diminishing, which is beneficial for the Armenian authorities.

“In a few days, when we will come here again, we can come and be convinced that during these few days we’ve had losses among our rank and file. But we will keep coming until the upper echelons realize they can’t be so indifferent toward people whose health has deteriorated for this county. Weather conditions aren’t important; if required, we will plan a sit-in right on New Year’s Eve,” they said.

Recall, the retired pilots say they were injured while on the job, but since the collapse of the Soviet Union, have never received compensation.
