Police Officers, Georgian Citizen Stole Books from Armenia’s National Library

The RA Special Investigation Service (SIS) is currently investigating the criminal case of the large-scale theft and appropriation of books valued at several million drams from the National Library of Armenia and the Yerevan State University in 2010–2011, according to a statement by the SIS press service.

The preliminary investigation determined that between 2010–2011, police officer Y. Ghambaryan and Georgian citizen V. Azariashvili regularly broke into the National Library’s stacks and usurped about 150 books.

On Dec. 26, 2011, the criminals were apprehended and four people who tried to break into the building were immediately detained. The Special Investigation Service notes that it has obtained evidence that the head of the Yerevan State University library sold around 19 books to V. Azariashvili then used the money gained for personal use.

Criminal charges have been brought against 6 people: the head of the library is accused of appropriation, while the other five (Georgian citizen V. Azariashvili; two police officers, Y. and D. Ghambaryan; Police Academy of Armenia student V. Y.; and Armenian citizen K. Hovhannisyan) are charged with theft and attempt of theft.
