Armenian Parliament Adopts Controversial Law Permitting Alcohol Advertising on TV

Armenia's National Assembly upon its first reading today adopted the draft law on making amendments to the Law on Television and Radio and the Law on Advertising. Recall, the bill will permit the advertising of beverages containing more than 20% alcohol content on television between 10 pm and 6 am.

Sixty-six MPs voted in favor of the bill, 1 voted against, and 2 abstained. Ahead of the vote, Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) MP Artsvik Minasyan said that the four non-ruling parties (Heritage Party, Armenian National Congress, Prosperous Armenia Party, and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation) would not participate in the vote.

The bill had become the subject of heated debate in parliament yesterday. Armenian National Congress MPs Aram Manukyan and Nikol Pashinyan had said that the bill protects the interests of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's brother-in-law, Mikael Minasyan.
