Man Allegedly Beaten up by Armenian Governor’s Son Loses Vision in Right Eye; Left Eyesight Deteriorated by 40%

Harutyun Zakaryan, a resident of the town of Goris in the Armenian Syunik province, who lost vision in the right eye as a result of a beating on May 2, has suffered injuries to his left eye, too, Zakaryan, who is currently undergoing treatment in one of Moscow's eye hospitals, told Epress.am.

Note, according to media reports, Tigran Khachatrian, the son of Syunik governor Surik Khachatryan, was among around the 4 dozen men who beat up and injured Harutyun Zakarian and his brother, Mushegh Zakaryan.

The doctors failed to restore the vision in Zakaryan's right eye, despite the five-hour operation carried out on May 21. According to the victim, top Russian medical experts fought to restore his eyesight, but to no avail, given the severity of his injuries. Currently Zakaryan is getting ready for another surgery.

“The surgery is needed to keep the eye at least,” Zakaryan said. He added that, according to the doctors, the vision in his left eye has deteriorated by 40% due to inflammation resulting from the injuries.

Zakaryan refused to talk about the incident, did not wish to asses the undergoing investigation into the case. Currently, he is only concerned about his health and will answer other questions later, the victim said.

In the evening of May 2, Tigran Khachatryan, reportedly, entered into a verbal argument with Zakaryan and his brother. The young men agreed to meet up later outside of Goris, where the brothers were beat up by more than 40 people, suffering serious injuries. A criminal case has been launched pursuant to Part 3 of the Article 258 of the RA Criminal Code (hooliganism by a group of persons or organized group); however, to date, no one has been arrested in connection with the beating.
