Venice Biennale Opened Saturday to an Incomplete Armenian Pavilion

Epress.am became informed on Monday that Armenia’s Pavilion at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, which opened two days ago, was incomplete.

Recall, Armenia this year is represented by local artists Astghik Melkonyan, Mher Azatyan and Grigor Khachatryan.

In response to a question by Epress.am, one of the curators of the Armenian Pavilion, Ruben Arevshatyan, explained the reason for not having displayed all of the work at the Biennale’s opening on Jun. 4.

“An important construction piece of Astghik Melkonyan’s installation was lost during shipping. We tried to restore it on the spot, for the installation to be ready on the opening day, but it turned out in the end that because of substitute materials, in a technical aspect—such a solution was not sufficient for building the installation. For this reason we decided to present only two-thirds of the display and wait till the construction piece gets to Venice [from Yerevan]. It arrived… yesterday, today it’s clearing customs and tomorrow, we will begin putting [the installation] together. The second — full — opening of the Pavilion will be on Friday at 5 pm,” he said.
