Seriously ill Nubarashen convict Hrachya Gevorgyan agreed to end a month-long hunger strike two days ago under the condition that he receives the appropriate medical treatment that has been promised to him by prison administration, Arman Veziryan, a monitor for Armenia's Helsinki Association, told Epress.am. The human rights activist added that Gevorgyan was taken to a hospital on Thursday for checkups.
“Hrachya has been assigned treatment, injections in the hospital; but he does not expect the penal institution to actually carry out the treatment. If he is not provided with proper care, he’ll resume the hunger strike,” Veziryan said.
According to the monitor, Hrachya Gevorgyan lived in unsanitary conditions for nearly two months since he was unable to bathe due to illness. It was only after Helsinki Association reported the issue on its website that the infirmary head helped to wash the prisoner and transfer him to the hospital, Veziryan said.
