Another Non-Combat Death in Armenia’s Army

A young Armenian conscript died in one of the military units in Stepanakert, the capital of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, on Feb. 12.

RA Ministry of Defense investigation department chief Mary Sargsyan told Epress.am that a criminal case has been launched under Article 110 Section 1 of the RA Criminal Code: “Causing somebody to commit suicide or make an attempt at a suicide by indirect willfulness or by negligence, by means of threat, cruel treatment or regular humiliation of one’s dignity, is punished with imprisonment for the term of up to 3 years.”

The dead soldier, Torgom Sarukhanyan, was called to compulsory service in 2009.

As previously reported, on Feb. 6, in one of the military units toward the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army’s southern position, contract soldier Gevorg Andranik Kotinyan, 18, died as a result of “an emergency incident,” according to a statement issued by the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army press department. As for what the “emergency incident” was, the statement did not say.
