Standing behind Azerbaijan’s latest threats to Nagorno-Karabakh is NATO, said Dr. Mikhail Alexandrov during an online conference titled “Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Prospects: Opportunities and Obstacles.”
“There are double standards being used in resolving the Karabakh conflict and the conflict is taking too long. Russia is forced to juggle between Armenia and Azerbaijan and provide favors simultaneously to both.
“The West’s position on evidence of genocide on Armenians in Karabakh is incomprehensible. It’s unclear why Armenia’s democratic regime is put on par with Nagorno-Karabakh’s autocratic regime,” he said.
The threats by Azerbaijan are simply a way of pressuring Armenia, said Alexandrov. Delaying the settlement of the conflict is, according to the analyst, advantageous first and foremost for the West.
“If you lose, make concessions. But Azerbaijan, practically speaking the losing party, tries to force Armenia to make concessions. Behind this is the West, particularly NATO,” he said, reported by the Russian-language publication Arguments and Facts.
“The North Atlantic Alliance needs Azerbaijan as the Transcaucasus ‘corridor’ to the Caspian Sea. Georgia managed to become a NATO member, but Azerbaijan still falters. And NATO has found a way to put pressure on Azerbaijan. And the tool for applying pressure is Karabakh,” Alexandrov said.
