Court to Issue Verdict on Samson Khachatryan Case Today

The trial of Armenian National Congress supporter, well-known boxer and double European champion Samson Khachatryan is currently underway in the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts. The court presided over by  Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan will issue a verdict on the case today.

Khachatryan’s attorney Ara Zakaryan left the courtroom for 30 minutes in order to become better familiar with court material.

As previously reported, Samson Khachatryan was arrested on Mar. 13. He is being charged under RA Criminal Code Article 316 Section 1 (violence against a representative of the authorities), connected to an incident that took place during the March 1 HAK rally.

According to a statement issued by the police statement, at the intersection of Mashtots and Koryun streets in Yerevan at around 6 pm on Mar. 1, Khachatryan “did not obey the lawful demands by police officers, displayed resistance and hit one of the officers, causing him bodily harm.”

The opposition bloc has called the arrest a “police provocation” and persecution of an activist for his political views.
