Serzh Sargsyan’s Statement Not Tied to HAK’s Demand: HHK Spokesperson

In the last three years, both the events of March 1, 2008, and the deplorable issues in the justice sector have always been in Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s focus of attention, ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) press spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told Epress.am today, responding to a question on whether Sargsyan’s statement yesterday on a “new momentum and pronounced activation” into investigating the post-2008 election violence was a fulfilling of one of the Armenian National Congress’ demands.

According to Sharmazanov, the Armenian president is in favor of resolving issues through civilized dialogue and “our [Armenian National] Congress colleagues understand this.”

“In my opinion, they have to reject kickboxing and move on to chess. Speaking from positions of force is not allowed in the political arena,” he said.

Recall, addressing law enforcement authorities at a meeting on Wednesday, Sargsyan ordered them to investigate the 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan with greater vigor, reports RFE/RL’s Armenian service.

“Especially for me, this is a very important issue, and my demand addressed to you is to once again and more meticulously address even those circumstances where you think there can be nothing new,” he said. “Try to find new ways of solving those incidents.”

“A lot of time has passed; maybe there are people who were witnesses and didn’t want to cooperate with law-enforcement bodies at the time but have now different approaches. That’s also very possible,” he added.
