The proposal made by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to the parliament to grant amnesty might be discussed in the upcoming parliamentary session since it was made prior to May 28 (Republic Day) and there’s still a lot of time, ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) press spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov told Epress.am.
“The proposal might be discussed in an extraordinary session and in the upcoming session. It depends on what decision will be made at the meeting called by National Assembly Chair,” he said.
Heritage Party parliamentary faction member Styopa (Stepan) Safaryan informed Epress.am that Sargsyan’s proposal will be discussed in a special session outside of the regular parliamentary sessions.
“Since this issue wasn’t raised in today’s meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, then it’s logical to assume that the issue will be discussed separately,” said Safaryan.
As reported earlier today, Serzh Sargsyan appealed to the National Assembly on occasion of the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia with the proposal of announcing an amnesty, according to the president’s press office. Neither who the amnesty might refer to nor other details are available at this time.
Note, the 20th anniversary of the independence of Republic of Armenia falls on Sept. 21 of this year. Armenia marks Republic Day on May 28, which is the day the First Republic of Armenia was established in 1918. In 1922, the republic was incorporated into the Soviet Union, and on Sept. 21, 1991, Armenia once again declared its independence.
