Parliament Won’t be Discussing Sargsyan’s Amnesty Proposal Today

The National Assembly won’t be discussing Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s May 20 amnesty proposal to parliament today, Heritage Party MP Zaruhi Postanjyan told Epress.am today.

“Discussion of this issue wasn’t on the current agenda today,” she said.

Recall, Sargsyan appealed to the National Assembly on Friday to grant amnesty on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia. Afterwards, a closed session of the RA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs held a special closed meeting during which time the text of the amnesty was distributed to members. After reading the material, the documents were returned.

Also recall that one of the key demands by opposition force the Armenian National Congress (HAK) is the release of the remaining “political prisoners” — oppositionists who were imprisoned in connection with the events of Mar. 1–2, 2008 — prior to HAK’s May 31 rally.
