Yerevan Man Murders 64-Year-Old Woman then Sets House on Fire

At 5:40 pm on Sept. 17, downtown Yerevan police received a call that there was a fire in one of the apartments on Nalbandyan St.

Rescue services arriving at the scene found the body of Armine Hovsepyan, 64, with burns and head fractures. Also in the same apartment, police found Karen Petrosyan, 43. Petrosyan, diagnosed with bodily injuries, respiratory burns and alcohol poisoning, was moved to the Research Center of Radiation Medicine and Burns in the Armenian capital.

On Sept. 18, criminal proceedings under RA Criminal Code Article 104 (“murder”) Section 2, Article 175 (“banditry”) Section 2 and Article 185 (willfully destroying or damaging property) Section 2 were launched.

Law enforcement officials determined that at 12 pm on Sept. 17, Petrosyan, having consumed an alcoholic drink,  went to Hovsepyan’s home, where he consumed more alcohol, then repeatedly beat Hovsepyan over the head with a hammer and killed her.

Petrosyan, after stealing Hovsepyan’s 40,000 drams and gold jewelry, set fire to the apartment so as to hide his crime — only to find that he was unable to leave the apartment.

After being moved to the medical center, Petrosyan attempted to flee; however, he was caught by police at the corner of Margaryan and Halabyan streets and arrested.
