The Armenian people are on the list of nations that remain but are diminishing. Forecasts predict that there will be a population of 1.5 million in Armenia in the middle of this century, and it’s not clear whether all will be ethnic Armenians or not, said sociologist Aharon Adibekyan, speaking to journalists in the Armenian capital today.
“UN ethnographers estimate that nations on earth are divided into 4 categories: growing, retaining their number, diminishing in number but not vanishing, and vanishing peoples,” he said.
Speaking about Armenians being divided, Adibekyan said that Armenians cannot gather around any one thing.
“Our nation has one group dance, kochari, a dance of shepherds. What remains is the circle dance and that, someone comes, dances and leaves, and everyone claps,” he said.
The sociologist pointed out that Armenia’s Yezidi community is rapidly growing and in 50 years they will comprise a large part of the country’s population.
For comparison’s sake, Adibekyan also citing Azebaijan’s population figures.
“Based on our estimates, [Azerbaijan’s population] should be 6 million, but they say it’s 9 million 116 thousand. They are trying to appear the strongest in the region in economic and human resources,” he said.
