Turns Out Armenian Citizen in South Sudan Wasn’t Arrested

The airline crew arrested in South Sudan yesterday, which also included an Armenian national, has been released, RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tigran Balayan told Epress.am.

According to Balayan, the crew, in fact, wasn’t arrested; simply the aircraft was taken from them, which is tied to the political situation in South Sudan. While the aircraft was under authorities’ control, its crew was kept in the military camp.

The Armenian national, the MFA spokesperson continued, asked that his name not be made public but said that he’ll wait in South Sudan until the fate of their aircraft is known, after which he too will decide what to do.

Balayan tweeted earlier that the Ministry spoke with the Armenian national by phone and “he is in freedom and safety.”

It was reported earlier that the crew of Park Air Company of Sudan An-32 aircraft were arrested in South Sudan by special services. Armenia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry determined the identity of the Armenian national, but did not go public with it due to ethical considerations.
