Striking Armavia Airline Banned from Flying to Russia Because of Debt: Zvartnots

Armenian national air carrier Armavia today announced a strike against Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan. In a statement issued today, the airline cites increasing airport costs as the reason for its decision. As early as this morning, Armavia cancelled service of its Yerevan-Moscow and Yerevan-Rostov flights.

In response, Armenia International Airports (AIA), which owns Zvartnots airport, said that Armavia, being a national carrier, unlike other airlines, enjoys special rates provided by AIA.

“Moreover, according to a telegram from RosNavigatsiya, due to accumulated debts, Armavia arilines is prohibited from flying to Russia and entering Russian airspace.

“Apparently, rates in not only Armenia, but also Russia re expensive for the air carrier.

“Our company negatively assesses Armavia’s inappropriate speculations and false and groundless accusations, and it pains us that the nation’s sole carrier has found itself in such a state,” concludes AIA in its statement.
