The political part of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine was signed in Brussels earlier today.
Signing on behalf of the EU was President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, while signing on behalf of Ukraine was interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
Ukraine was set to sign the EU Association Agreement back in November 28–29, 2013, at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius. However, one week before the summit, the government of Ukraine headed by Mykola Azarov declared it would be suspending the process, which "ignited months of pro-EU street protests in Ukraine and, eventually, unrest that sent [Viktor Yanukovych] fleeing into Russian exile in late February."
