Criminal Case Launched to Investigate Allegations of Police Torture

According to prisoner V.Y. of Artik Penitentiary, Shirak Regional Police employees at around 11:45 pm on April 2 used violence to extort a confession from him, then kept him unlawfully for 4 hours in the building, reports the Special Investigation Service of the Republic of Armenia .

Based on the prisoner's statement, a criminal case on grounds of RA Criminal Code Article 309 Section 2 (exceeding official authorities, "committed with violence, weapons or special measures") was launched. A preliminary investigation is underway.
