Armenia’s State Electricity Company in Debt, But Officials’ Salaries to be Increased

Just two days ago RA Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) Chair Robert Nazaryan (pictured) said electricity tariffs would increase by 3.8–4.3 AMD/kWh on August 1 because Electric Networks of Armenia is operating at a loss, has a debt of 16 billion AMD, and so on. As reported by local daily Chorrord Inqnishkhanutyun, the population didn't yet have time to recover from this news before the National Assembly yesterday made an even more astonishing decision: the salaries of the country's president, prime minister, parliamentary speaker, MPs and civil servants will increase from July 1.

"[Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan’s [monthly] salary will increase by 203% — from 436 thousand to 1.223 million dram. To satisfy the monetary demands of high-ranking officials, 35 billion dram will be allocated from the [state] budget," reports the paper.
