Police Detain Activist Who Tore Banner Advertising “An Improved Yerevan”

Anahit Aghekyan was detained by police earlier today near the Afrikyan House, civil society activist Arpine Galfayan informed Epress.am. According to her, workers began building a gate in the yard of the building, and activists responded with nonviolent resistance.

Witness Grigor Ghazaryan told Epress.am that Aghekyan merely tore off the banner surrounding the construction site that read "An improved Yerevan". According to him, police officers twisted Aghekyan's arms, who shouted: "I treat people like you with these hands!"

Recall, members of the initiative SOS! Save the Afrikyans' Building have been protesting against the dismantling of the building for weeks, stating that it is a historically and culturally significant monument. Activist Sona Asatrian was detained by police two days ago and released the same day. Several activists were detained by police last week when they attempted to remove the tin sheets surrounding the building and prevent the dismantling.
