Tailing Dump near Armenian Monastery is Polluting the Surrounding Area

The “Nazik” re-cultivated tailing dump near the Akhtala monastery is continuing to pollute the surrounding area, writes ecolur.org.

The Nazik tailing dump has exploited Akhtala’s ore-processing plant which is also in the village. The tailing dump has been conserved two times; the first time was in 1988, and the second in 2010, after which it was recultivated and trees were planted around it in 2012.

On October 3, a working group from EcoLur environmental NGO visited the tailing dam. Photographs from the NGO reveal that the trees have begun to grow and that the area around the dam has become greener. However, because of the rain, the tailings have reached the top layer of the dump and began flowing over into the Akhtala gorge, which later flows into the transnational Debed River.
