Opposition Lawmaker Attacked in Stepanakert

Hayk Khanumyan, the leader of opposition National Rebirth faction in Nagorno-Karabakh’s parliament, was attacked and kidnapped this morning on his way to an interview with Civilnet.am reporter Derenik Malkhasyan. A group of unknown in a military uniform grabbed the lawmaker and forcibly put him in a car as he approached Armenia Hotel in Stepanakert, where the meeting was supposed to be held, Malkhasyan reported.

National Rebirth supporter Elmira Grigoryan told RFE/RL's Armenian service (Azatutyun.am) that Khanumyan was subsequently dumped in an area not far from her house. The oppositionist, according to Grigoryan, had been severely beaten and was hospitalized as a result.

Khanumyan's wife, Diana Movsisyan, for her part, said she had just talked to her husband who warned her not to leave the house.
