Release of Political Prisoners Not Only Armenia’s Issue: Human Rights Activist

From 1 pm to 3 pm on Jan. 18, Armenia’s Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners and Persecuted People will be organizing a demonstration in front of the Armenia Marriott hotel in central Yerevan.

Committee coordinator Vardan Harutyunyan, speaking to Epress.am, said the main message of the rally is going to be the immediate release of Armenia’s political prisoners, which will be aimed at Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg.

Recall that Hammarberg will be in Armenia from Jan. 18–21 and will be meeting with Armenian National Congress leader Levon Ter-Petrossian and imprisoned journalist Nikol Pashinyan.

“We will be demanding that members of European agencies monitor their demands, because the issue of political prisoners is not only our business, but also theirs. It is among their obligations, that there are no persecutions and political prisoners in their member countries.

“That which we’re demanding is not an abstract thing, but their responsibility,” he said.
