Activist Detained Today During Dismantling of Afrikyans’ Building

Member of the initiative SOS! Save the Afrikyans' Building, activist Sona Asatrian was detained by police earlier today on suspicion of willful damage to property and weapon possession. This was conveyed to Epress.am by the public relations department of the Armenian Police. No further details were provided.

Asatrian was picked up by police at the Afrikyans' House at 11 Teryan Street, where dismantling work had begun today. The activist was trying to tear the posters announcing the gentrification project using what appeared to be a switchblade.

SOS! Save the Afrikyans' Building members have been protesting against the dismantling of the building since last week, stating that it is a historically and culturally significant monument. Several activists were detained by police last week when they attempted to remove the tin sheets surrounding the building and prevent the dismantling.
