Young Man Found Hanged in Armavir Jail Was ‘Not Predisposed’ to Suicide

A post-mortem forensic psychiatric examination has shown that Anzor Karapetyan, a 21-year-old Armavir resident who was found hanged in his cell a few hours after being taken to jail in January this year, was not predisposed towards suicide, Ani Chatinyan, a lawyer for Karapetyan's legal successor, told Epress.am on Wednesday.

“These results imply that an additional investigation is needed to establish the real circumstances of Anzor Karapetyan's death. According to a previously conducted forensic medical examination, the death was caused by damage to the throat and asphyxiation, which means that Karapetyan might have been hanged,” Chatinyan said.

The lawyer added that she intended to file a motion for a reinvestigation of the case since “there are many mysterious circumstances surrounding the death.”

Anzor Karapetyan, as previously reported, participated in a fight on December 21, 2015 in the Armenian town of Armavir. He then turned himself in to the police and was arrested on the spot. On January 3, a court ruled to send Karapetyan to Armavir jail. The next day, prison officials handed the young man's body over to his relatives, saying that he had committed suicide.
