New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it would be “a sad day for America” if opponents successfully thwart plans for a mosque at Ground Zero, reports Telegraph.co.uk.
Bloomberg has been a constant supporter of the plan to built an Islamic centre and mosque two blocks from where the World Trade Center stood.
On Friday, President Barack Obama also backed the right for the developers to build a mosque there.
He added over the weekend that he was not commenting on the wisdom of building a mosque close to Ground Zero, but simply saying that they had a right to do so.
Bloomberg has been among a few outspoken elected officials supporting the plans.
Some have said it is insensitive because the terrorists who struck the buildings in 2001 were Islamic extremists, while others argue that it is a sign of American liberty and tolerance.
Bloomberg applauded President Obama for backing the mosque.
