Increasing Pension Payments Won’t Improve Socioeconomic Situation: Opinion

Pension reforms are associated with serious problems, and they can’t be easy, said Doctor of Economics Tatul Manaseryan at a press conference today, speaking on the National Assembly hearings on state pensions that took place yesterday.

According to Manaseryan, efforts must be made so that people in Armenia aren’t afraid of getting old, or at least be provided for by the state.

“The institute of responsibility must be enshrined by law. No fund should be able to avoid liability, and there can’t be talk of bankruptcy,” said the former National Assembly deputy, adding that the current law needs polishing and improvement.

In his opinion, increasing pension payments can’t improve the socioeconomic situation.

“But I also find that likewise, you can’t not take these steps,” said the economist.
