Armenia’s ‘Tough’ Stance Influenced Medvedev: Russian Journalist

Russia is prepared to give Iran guarantees that military action will not be taken against Iran, said Maxim Shevchenko during an Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow) radio broadcast, commenting on yesterday’s meeting between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

According to Shevchenko, such an approach by Russia is affected by “Armenia’s quite tough position.”

“When I was recently in Yerevan participating in a major media forum, where there were also heads of leading Russian mass media, meetings also took place with Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and RA President Serzh Sargsyan. Both assured us that Iran is one of Armenia’s most important allies. I quote [Armenian] Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan’s words: ‘Never in any country in the world have Armenians lived as comfortably as they do in Iran, which is why Armenia will never betray Iran.’ I am confident that in this issue, CSTO ally Armenia’s position has also influenced [Russian] President [Dmitry] Medvedev’s position,” he said.
