‘We’re Afraid of Our Children Going Hungry’: Demonstrators Ask Yerevan Mayor for Bread Money

“We don’t want anything from you; we want bread [i.e food]. We are only afraid of our children going hungry; we’re afraid of nothing else.”

A group gathered in front of Yerevan City Hall were addressing such statements to Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan. Recall, today is the second day in front of city hall that merchants are protesting the city’s decision to prohibit vendors from selling their wares on the street.

Protestors expressed their wish to meet with Karapetyan.

“We can’t live in this city oppressed, the mayor is afraid, why should he speak with the people, ay, coward,” said a few of the protestors.

Another demonstrator said, “[Armenian President] Serzh [Sargsyan] was saying, ‘Forward, Armenia,’ you’ve put it in reverse, we’ve gone 100 kilometers back.”

Demonstrators, who were shouting “Work!”, “Money for Bread,” and “We Want Bread,” explained how the Yerevan mayor’s decision has left them in an inextricable situation.
