Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Would Like to Release Political Prisoners, But…

There’s no such term as “political prisoner” from an international human rights point of view. Yes, there might be suspicions that people are charged not so much on evidence as they are along political lines, but who’s to prove that? asked Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Armen Harutyunyan at a press conference in Yerevan today.

He also said, as Human Rights Defender, he would be in support of releasing “those people”; however, as an attorney, he understands that there are issues which must be resolved legally.

“In every specific case, a specific approach must be displayed, but I don’t rule out that legally, there can be complications; for example, there can be a case whereby releasing one man means releasing 200 people because 200 people are imprisoned under that article. That is, you have to understand, that it’s not a simple process,” said Harutyunyan.
