Yemen’s president, in the wake of Arab uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, has postponed a visit to the United States due to take place later this month, state news agency Saba said on Sunday, AFP reports.
“President Ali Abdullah Saleh has decided to postpone a visit to the United States … scheduled for late February due to the current developments in the region,” an official in his office said, quoted by Saba.
He said the two countries would “communicate via diplomatic channels” to set a new date.
Anti-riot police on Sunday used batons to disperse about 2,000 protesters in central Sanaa calling for Saleh to step down, injuring a woman and making 10 arrests, witnesses said.
Police also used batons in the southern city of Taez to break up a protest in the main square, arresting 120 demonstrators, participants told AFP.
And thousands of young Yemenis gathered in Sanaa on Saturday calling for Saleh to step down like Egypt’s president Hosni Mubarak, who handed over to Egypt’s military after 18 days of mass protests.
