Today, the People’s Party presented an ultimatum to RA President Serzh Sargsyan: to release imprisoned political dissidents, to rule out handing Nagorno-Karabakh over to Azerbaijan and not permit Western peacekeeping forces to enter Armenia, to protect the interests of Javakhq (Samtskhe-Javakheti) Armenians on a state level and support them, to significantly raise pension payments, to stop groundless inflation, to raise social assistance benefits, to give the youth an important and primary place and to eliminate the reasons for emigration. This “ultimatum” was conveyed by People’s Party leader Tigran Karapetyan during his “outdoor conference” today.
“Armenia is on the threshold of irreversible losses and social upheavals, and the Armenian government’s adopted policy accelerates the decline; if these reforms are not fulfilled, we will express ‘no confidence’ to the RA authorities,” reads the statement by the opposition group.
According to Karapetyan, if the ultimatum is not accepted, he will appeal to the people on Feb. 28.
“We’ll say no to the authorities, we’ll show them a red card and we will demand early parliamentary and presidential elections, otherwise today it’s the same people in politics, Levon Ter-Petrossian, Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sargsyan,” he said.
Explaining the small numbers of people who came to attend his rally today, Karapetyan said, “They stooped so low, that the roads leading to Yerevan are closed.”
